Pilar and Leonardo Maekawa of the Racquet Club Victoria Figure Skating Club won silver at the recent 2010 B.C./Yukon Figure Skating Sectional Championships in Richmond. The two moved up a level and won the silver medal in novice dance and qualifed for the Western Challenge in Ontario, Dec. 2-6. Dominique Banner competed in pre-novice ladies, qualifying for the B.C. Winter Games.

It was a little wobbly, but the Medicine Hat Tigers got a measure of revenge Friday night. Wacey Hamilton scored twice and tallied an assist as the Tigers dumped the Prince Albert Raiders 6-4 in Western Hockey League action Friday night. Although the Tigers are on a three-game roll, Medicine Hat's players felt they were shaky Friday night.

Stefan Elliott's ninth goal of the season was the game-winner as the Saskatoon Blades beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 4-1 in Western Hockey League play Friday. Brent Benson, Josh Nicholls and Walker Wintoneak also scored for the Blades (19-3-3) who led 3-0 after two periods. Antonin Honejsek scored his fifth goal of the season early in the third period for the Warriors.

Everett will find out tonight when it plays Tri-City, the Western Conference's top team. EVERETT — It's taken two months, but the Everett Silvertips are finally getting their first look at the team they're trying to chase. Everett heads to Kennewick today for its first meeting of the season with the U.S. Division- and Western Conference-leading Tri-City Americans, and it should serve as a good gauge of just where the Tips stand in the division and conference races.

Eric Mestery is heading back to the team that drafted him. In an announcement Thursday the Lethbridge Hurricanes announced they had traded the six-foot-five, 202-pound blueliner back to the Tri-City Americans in exchange for a second round pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. "It's good for both sides," said Hurricanes general manger and head coach Rich Preston.

Much was made about the attendance -- or lack thereof -- at last week's Road to the Roar pre-Olympic curling event. Well, in advance of the Dec. 10 start of the Roar of the Rings final Olympic qualifier in Edmonton, empty-seat alarm bells are already ringing in the Alberta capital. An Edmonton Journal story earlier this week detailed concerns by the committee there.

Two rookies from the Swift Current Broncos 2008 draft class have been selected to skate in the upcoming World Under 17 Challenge. Defensive standout Reece Scarlett and power forward Adam Lowry were named to Team Pacific for the Under 17 Challenge in Ontario on Dec. 28 to Jan. 4. The two Alberta-born rookies join 22 other top 16-year-old prospects for this tournament.
